Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign
International School of Choueifat - Manama
October 07, 2015All around the world, there are multitudes of women suffering from a woebegone malady known as breast cancer. Over 522,000 people fell victim to this auto-immune disease in 2012 alone. No one is completely shielded from a possibility of being affected, with breast cancer being the leading cause of all cancer-related cases in women (25%). It is also possible for men to develop it (albeit, women are approximately 100 times more likely to be affected).
In the US, 1 in every 8 women are struck with the illness and around 40,290 individuals are expected to die this year. Since treatment is quite costly in countries without free healthcare, death rates could be much lower. Therefore, there are numerous organizations and charities worldwide striving to fund each and every single person’s treatment. Since this month is celebrated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the students at ISC-Manama wanted to contribute to the cause by initiating a fundraiser for the THINK PINK! charity organization.
It was an undeniably spectacular occasion. Over 1,200 BHD ($ 3,180+) was raised with enthusiastic students from all grades surging to the donation tent. SLO® prefects were (quite literally) bombarded with an array of money bills, and in return, the donators were encumbered with breast cancer-related merchandise, from small pink ribbons to fuchsia-toned soft drinks. I can safely say that the knot was tied with this event.
Overall, the event hugely benefitted the SLO®, and the charity organization involved. We’re just getting started though. A barrage of vibrant and sublime activities are in store for the students. We’ve learned a lot from this event, taken students’ ideas and opinions into consideration, and hopefully we’ll implement those ideas into next year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Dodgeball
International School on the Rhine (ISR)
Grades: 7-9
September 22, 2015What better way to build new relationships at the start of the school year than a friendly Dodgeball tournament? The Sports & Health Department organized a Dodgeball Intramural for Grade 7-9 students on Tuesday, 22nd September. Instead of having each grade face off against the other, the grades were mixed so the students in different classes got to know each other. It was a great success with all students receiving medals for their great sportsmanship!
Handover Ceremony
International School of Choueifat - Choueifat
September 10, 2015On September 10th the students excitedly stood side by side; one by one they were called to receive the letter that they had all been waiting for; their one way ticket into leadership. Sarah Lilly, a previous deputy head, took pride in taking a day off her university's busy schedule to announce the SLO® prefects of 2015-2016. Mr. Abdullbaki also joined in this heartfelt ceremony to present the awards to the prefects while beautiful pictures were taken.
Of course, it was no surprise when Rachel Shehayeb was called out as 2015-16’s Head Prefect; she truly deserved it! To summarize this magnificent ceremony, all the prefects aligned as one and chanted the SLO® vows, assuring the school of a pleasant year. As it all came to an end, a group picture was taken of all the prefects.
SLO® Training
International School of Choueifat - Choueifat
Grades: 9-12
August 25, 2015On August 25th, the SLO® was buzzing with energy and excitement as prefects returned after a summer well-spent.
They were met by last year’s head prefect, Nour Al-Aridi, who got them all back into the SLO® spirit with an ice breaker that had them soaked as they described their favorite characteristics about each other, which only served to further strengthen the friendship among them.
Nour later shared some of the things she had learned during her time at school and gave them all tips on how to run the SLO® successfully.
The prefects then brainstormed ideas and events to make this year a great one!
