Grade 4 and 5 Math Bee Competition

SIS - Adma

October 01, 2013

The Student Life Organization® of SIS – Adma held a Math Bee Competition for Grade 4 and 5 students in the Charles Saad Performance Hall during the month of October.

Teams consisted of 3 players each and were divided and set up according to students’ grade averages.  This ensured that the groups were varied and allowed for a levelled playing field.

The grade 4 Math Bee was held during the first week of October (1st – 4th).  There were 18 teams competing against each other.  In each round, two teams competed to see who will move closer to becoming the Math Bee Champions.  Rounds consisted of 8 questions and the team with the most correct answers moved to the next round until the Champion was announced.

The grade 5 students competed at the end of October (23rd – 25th).  They had a total of 12 teams that participated (using the same tournament structure as for grade 4).

The questions for both competitions were based on word problem formats that the students had to solve as a team.

The aim of the Bee was to:

  • Show students that academics are fun and exciting.
  • Enhance the students’ math skills while improving their teamwork through team building activities.
  • Enrich the participants’ and audience’s knowledge whilst creating a competitive yet friendly and positive atmosphere.
  • Help the participants develop essential time management skills.

During the Bee, the hall was filled with an air of excitement as the participants and teams competed to showcase their math skills by solving word problems.

At the end of the Math Bee Competition, certificates were distributed to all participants and the winning team received their well-deserved first-prize gift.

Kindergarten Bullying Prevention Story Event

HCCS - Holyoke Community Charter School

October 07, 2013

During October 7, 2013 the Holyoke Community Charter School united efforts with the World’s National Campaign Against Bullying. To acknowledge this huge challenge, the school’s SLO® Prefects, alongside the AQC, SLC and Director, planned a Kindergarten Bullying Prevention Story Event.  During the event Mr. Fabian Ramirez, a bullying-prevention speaker based in Dallas, Texas spoke to the students.  He is passionate about helping to eliminate acts of bullying on school campuses. He teaches students how to respond to students who bully.

The goals of the event were:

  • For students to learn how to respond to acts of bullying
  • To empower students to not be victims of bullying
  • To build resilience in order to help students through tough times
  • To learn that love has the power to transform an enemy into a friend

Everyone involved had a great day! The students were also privileged to hear a powerful message from Mayor Alex Morse relating to bullying at school, home and in the community. Mayor Morse stated that it is important for all of us to always feel safe no matter where we are.

High School Bullying Prevention Assembly

IAF - International Academy of Flint

October 31, 2013

On the last day of October, the International Academy of Flint’s SABIS Student Life Organization® Discipline and Activities Department prefects organized a Bully Prevention Assembly for their high school students (Gr. 9 – 12).  Their aim was to take a different approach towards bullying.  Therefore, the prefects researched techniques on coping with bullying and also on how to reach out and “be there” for those that are being bullied.

SLO® held a survey prior to the assembly asking the students questions about the types of bullying they have witnessed at school and in their communities.   The results were used to help the prefects prepare the program for the Bullying Prevention Assembly.

On the day of the assembly, the program consisted of students sharing their own bullying stories; both victims and students who have bullied others.  Those students who had turned to bullying behavior shed some light on why they thought they were doing this.  The results from the survey were shared with the students and suggestions on how to cope with bullying were discussed.

The highlight of the assembly was the showing of the Bullying Prevention Video created by the SLO® prefects.  The video theme was aimed at building self-esteem and encouraging students to belief in themselves.

There was a lot of positive feedback from both students and staff.  It was such a huge success that the SLO® prefects are planning to visit the lower and middle school students’ homerooms during Term 2 to discuss Bullying Prevention with them as well.

When asked what their plans were to prevent bullying at IAF, they had this to say: “Our defense toward bullying is building up students’ self-esteem and befriending those that may be victims of bullying. This has been successful.“

Bullying Prevention Pledge Week

ISC - Cairo

September 29, 2013

The International School of Choueifat - Cairo has proudly completed a very successful Prevention of Bullying month, with the main project being the Bullying Prevention Pledge.

The Pledge Project’s aim was to give students the opportunity to voluntarily commit to “WE DO NOT stand for bullying” by signing a promise that they will make an effort to stand up against bullying as well as overcome and prevent it in their schools.

Students from KG1 - Gr.12 with faculty members from all the different departments around the school joined together to sign the Pledge to lend a hand in preventing any form of bullying around the school.

The SLO® Discipline Department has organized the event to aid the SLO® in their efforts in their “Prevention” campaign. During the course of the event, participants signed a pledge which clearly stresses the role of the signer in countering bullying in all its forms and types to provide a safer and better environment for all the students of ISC-Cairo. Participants also had their handprints taken on a large poster that further supports the Discipline Department’s efforts.

Pledge stations supervised by prefects were visible during the week on the playground where students could go to pledge and make their handprints, the students really enjoyed it. On the last day all the sport teams came with their coaches to sign their pledges.

ISC – Cairo students and teachers demonstrated their incredible commitment to stand up against bullying. With 80 faculty members and 1,620 students out of 2100 taking the pledge, ISC – Cairo have clearly stated that it will not stand for any type of bullying and will work to overcome it and prevent it.

The Pledge week was followed up with a “Wear an Orange T-shirt Spirit Day” to celebrate the great success of the pledge week and to visually great awareness for the Prevention of Bullying.
