New babies (future prefects):

On August 18, 2014, Christopher Abou Gharib came into this world at 7:08 pm and is so lucky to have Nathalie as his mother

Wedding:

It is with pleasure that we announce the union of Sam and Danielle on Friday September 19^th, 2014.

We wish the happy couple a lifetime of happiness, wonderful adventures and most importantly LOVE.

Training Sub-Department added to the Management Department

In order to ensure that all our prefects are trained to do their jobs properly, a new sub-department "Training" was added to the Management Department.

This sub-department will be tasked with designing and delivering training with the help of all the other departments.

On top of the regular prefect training, this sub-department will be responsible to plan and stage the SLO^® trainings such as the Mini-Camps, the SLOGA, etc.

Math Week

ISC - Amman

During Revision Week ISC – Amman’s SLO^® team came up with a brilliant idea to prepare their students for the upcoming exams.  The SLO^® Academic Department organized a “SLO^® Math Week” for grades 6, 7 and 8 students.  They offered each grade a different contest that took place during their lunch break.  The students competed against each other using the material that they are revising for the coming exams.

The Grade 6 students competed against each other in “The Wheel of Math” competition similar to the “Wheel of Knowledge” concept.  The wheel was divided into the following categories:

• Quick Math (Mental Math)
• Hello Mr. Venn (Set Theory Questions)
• Simple is Better (Simplifying Expressions)
• The X-Factor (Questions Involving Variables)

​Teams consisted of 3 students, with three teams competing against each other in one match. The contest consisted of 9 teams, playing a knock-out stage with three qualifying matches, which lead up to a very epic final match.

The Grade 7 students competed in the “So You Think You Can Graph” completion.  Students competed in teams of two to graph a given equation faster than the other teams.

The competition had a surprise final round where the two players of the winning team played one round against each other and the winner was crowned the champion of the competition!

The grade 8 students competed in the “Math Jeopardy” competition where a total of 12 teams of 2 (24 students in total) competed individually.  The students with the most correct answers advanced to the final knock-out-round. The winners played against each other until there was only one team left, and they will were crowned the Jeopardy Champions.

The slogan of the event was Together, We Can Prevent Failure

Grade 4 and 5 Math Bee Competition

SIS - Adma

The Student Life Organization^® of SIS – Adma held a Math Bee Competition for Grade 4 and 5 students in the Charles Saad Performance Hall during the month of October.

Teams consisted of 3 players each and were divided and set up according to students’ grade averages.  This ensured that the groups were varied and allowed for a levelled playing field. 

The grade 4 Math Bee was held during the first week of October (1^st – 4^th).  There were 18 teams competing against each other.  In each round, two teams competed to see who will move closer to becoming the Math Bee Champions.  Rounds consisted of 8 questions and the team with the most correct answers moved to the next round until the Champion was announced.

The grade 5 students competed at the end of October (23^rd – 25^th).  They had a total of 12 teams that participated (using the same tournament structure as for grade 4).

The questions for both competitions were based on word problem formats that the students had to solve as a team.

The aim of the Bee was to:

• Show students that academics are fun and exciting.
• Enhance the students’ math skills while improving their teamwork through team building activities.
• Enrich the participants’ and audience’s knowledge whilst creating a competitive yet friendly and positive atmosphere.
• Help the participants develop essential time management skills.

During the Bee, the hall was filled with an air of excitement as the participants and teams competed to showcase their math skills by solving word problems.

At the end of the Math Bee Competition, certificates were distributed to all participants and the winning team received their well-deserved first-prize gift.
