Earth Day
Internationale Schule Frankfurt
Grades: K - 12
April 22, 2015Each year on April 22, ISF celebrates Earth Day. This year was no exception. The Social Responsibility Department hosted all grade levels during their lunch hour and had different activities for all. Students from Kindergarten to grade 2 were given colour wheels and were asked to go out on the playground to find natural items matching those colours.
Students from grades 3 through 12 were invited to illustrate how human activities are affecting the earth and what we can do to prevent further destruction or help with regeneration. This was an initiative of the Climate Change Conference and we are looking to submit our flag to the conference in Paris, France.
The rest of the school was asked to make an “Earth Day Pledge”, which was a sort of promise to the Earth to treat it better. Students wrote this on a leaf and then we added the leaves to the branches of a tree. This will be kept in the foyer so that students can be reminded of their pledges.
Bake Sale
International School of Choueifat - Suleimaniah
Grades KG - 10
September 13, 2015In order to honor a friend who passed away this past summer due to cancer, the grade 9 students decided to raise money through a bake sale and donate the proceeds to the Children’s Cancer Hospital.
Students brought cookies, brownies, custard cakes and homemade treats to the SLO® and during the lunch break the KG teachers brought their students to the bake sale, bought treats and explained to them the purpose of the charity event. After the KG students left, eveyone else was admitted to purchase and partake in all the delicious treats available on that day.2400$ was raised.
Refugee Donation Drive
International School on the Rhine (ISR)
Grades: K - 12
September 30, 2015After reading articles in the newspaper about the refugees fleeing to Germany, that SLO® decided they could help and make a difference!
The Social Responsibility Department created flyers, posters and promoted this campaign in the school’s weekly newsletter to gather backpacks, suitcases, school supplies, clothing, shoes and toys to donate to the local refugee camp in Neuss. ISR wanted to take an active role and build relationships in their local community and help the refugees coming to Germany from Syria.
In the beginning, only a few items were collected. Suddenly, the news started spreading and donations began filling our school foyer. It was unbelievable! The ISR community even spread the word to their friends and families outside of ISR donated. Two weeks before the items were delivered, SLO® prefects began sorting all the donations into different piles and boxes. Finally everything was loaded onto ISR’s big yellow school bus and the donations were off to welcome the refugees to Germany!
Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign
International School of Choueifat - Manama
October 07, 2015All around the world, there are multitudes of women suffering from a woebegone malady known as breast cancer. Over 522,000 people fell victim to this auto-immune disease in 2012 alone. No one is completely shielded from a possibility of being affected, with breast cancer being the leading cause of all cancer-related cases in women (25%). It is also possible for men to develop it (albeit, women are approximately 100 times more likely to be affected).
In the US, 1 in every 8 women are struck with the illness and around 40,290 individuals are expected to die this year. Since treatment is quite costly in countries without free healthcare, death rates could be much lower. Therefore, there are numerous organizations and charities worldwide striving to fund each and every single person’s treatment. Since this month is celebrated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the students at ISC-Manama wanted to contribute to the cause by initiating a fundraiser for the THINK PINK! charity organization.
It was an undeniably spectacular occasion. Over 1,200 BHD ($ 3,180+) was raised with enthusiastic students from all grades surging to the donation tent. SLO® prefects were (quite literally) bombarded with an array of money bills, and in return, the donators were encumbered with breast cancer-related merchandise, from small pink ribbons to fuchsia-toned soft drinks. I can safely say that the knot was tied with this event.
Overall, the event hugely benefitted the SLO®, and the charity organization involved. We’re just getting started though. A barrage of vibrant and sublime activities are in store for the students. We’ve learned a lot from this event, taken students’ ideas and opinions into consideration, and hopefully we’ll implement those ideas into next year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
