The purpose of this Chinese Culture Day is to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival that occurs on the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. Many activities are being hosted to remember the Chinese traditions that once existed.
On the day of the event, students reunited in the library while wearing traditional Chinese outfits to participate in activities prepared by the SLO Activity Department, including making sachets, lacquer fans, and even mooncakes! The room was filled with eagerness and excitement as the activities began.
At the lacquer fan-making station, students selected a few colorful oil-based pigments to pour into a basin of water. They were then given fans to dip into the mixture and gently wave as they removed them, resulting in unique patterns on each fan.
Nearby, students were given small cloth bags to make a scented sachet using a mixture of aromatic herbs provided.
Meanwhile, the mooncake-making area was separated into four groups. Each group was provided with the necessary ingredients and food coloring to make their own mooncakes.
Valens (10B): I think this experience was very exciting. The Lacquer fan was very cool, and I also learned quite a bit about herbs. All the herbs smelled unique. At the same time, others were making mooncakes. Overall, I gained knowledge, unique memories and special little things in these activities, and it felt very rich.
Zoey (10B): Everyone was quite actively involved in the small activities held, and prizes were distributed. Besides, making sachets and lacquer fans was really meaningful!
Sunny (10B): Chinese Culture Day let me fully feel the charm of traditional Chinese culture, and I had a great time. Students were active in all of the activities proposed, and I joined in happily. The sachet-making filled the library with the fragrance of Chinese herbs, touching everyone’s heart. During lacquer fan crafting, Ms. Manal was very interested and kept taking photos. Seeing this, I felt proud that our culture was spread.
